The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated digital border management system introduced by the European Union to monitor the movement of non-EU nationals crossing the external borders of the Schengen Area. It replaces the traditional practice of manual passport stamping with a centralised electronic registration system.
The system was launched on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational across participating countries on 10 April 2026.
The EES applies to:
• Non-EU nationals (including UK citizens) travelling for short stays (up to 90 days in any 180 days)
• Both visa-required and visa-exempt travellers
It operates across 29 Schengen countries, including most EU Member States and associated countries such as Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein.
Exemptions include:
• EU/EEA/Swiss citizens
• Holders of residence permits in Schengen countries
The EU’s Entry/Exit System represents a major shift toward digital border governance, replacing analogue processes with biometric and data-driven monitoring. While it promises improved security and efficiency in the long term, its implementation has introduced short-term operational challenges and ongoing debates regarding privacy and proportionality.
