Secret Service officers shot and killed a suspect who opened fire at a security checkpoint near the White House complex on Saturday evening, officials said.
According to a preliminary investigation, the incident began shortly before 6 p.m. ET when an individual approached the checkpoint and targeted officers. Secret Service personnel returned fire, striking the suspect, who later succumbed to their injuries at an area hospital.
A bystander was also wounded during the altercation. Authorities have not yet determined whether the bystander was hit by the suspect's initial rounds or during the ensuing crossfire.
