A new Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has killed at least 65 people. Health officials have reported 246 suspected cases, all linked to Ituri province in the country’s northeast. The region borders both Uganda and South Sudan.

This marks Congo’s 17th recorded Ebola outbreak.

Uganda has also reported a related death. A 59 year old man who recently arrived from Congo died in Kampala after testing positive for the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola. No approved vaccine exists for this strain. Current Ebola vaccines only target the Zaire strain, which is considered the most lethal form of the virus.

“This is a large scale outbreak,” said Jay Bhattacharya, head of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
