Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley were found guilty of the rape and murder of Preston Davey, a 13-month-old boy they were adopting. Varley, a former teacher, murdered the infant during a sexual assault in July 2023, while McGowan-Fazakerley participated in prior sexual abuse. The child’s biological mother, Sarah Davey, is a convicted murderer, and the case has been described by prosecutors as one of the most shocking and horrific in recent history.

The birth mother of baby Preston Davey says she will "never forgive" monsters Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley for sexually abusing the tot for months before he was fatally attacked.

Sarah Davey wept as her victim impact statement was read out in court this morning. She described Preston as her "beautiful blue-eyed boy," who was "perfect from the moment he was born."

She said the youngster was "failed by the very people who were supposed to protect" him, adding that his death is "is not something I will ever recover from".

Ex-teacher Varley, 37, was found guilty of murdering the 13-month-old during a sexual assault on July 27, 2023. His partner, ex-public schoolboy and financial sales manager, John McGowan-Fazakerley, 32, will also be sentenced for his role in Preston's death, as well as a joint sex attack on the child four days earlier.

Preston, who was born to convicted killer Sarah Davey, was placed in the couple's care in April 2023, at nine months old. He endured horrific physical, sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of Varley for months while McGowan-Fazakerley turned a blind eye before taking part in a joint attack on Preston on July 23. On July 27, Preston was rushed to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in cardiac arrest and pronounced dead at 7.18pm.

Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley will be sentenced for their crimes at Preston Crown Court today.
